Issues, Interventions and Excuses
By admin | September 5, 2007
Yesterday, I read the USA Today story First-Born Kids Become CEO Material. As the first born, I love the title. I am a self-confessed serial start-up CEO. When I see a need, I also see an opportunity—a business opportunity. It can be fun –and annoying- to constantly have ideas popping in your head. I even created a ‘Next Big Idea’ file on my computer so that I don’t get (totally) distracted. The family joke is that I have issues and I need a Dr. Phil intervention. Hmmm, probably.
But, perhaps my issues come from being the oldest. I am the oldest of 2 girls. Growing up, it was assumed that I would and could take care of myself and my sister. There were expectations and I had responsibilities as the oldest. If there was an issue, I had to work it out. My ‘little’ sister is an extremely bright woman and great mother. She is a college graduate and star performer is her chosen career. She is a hard worker and has been with the same employer for over 10 years. She is content. And we have an extremely close relationship. But I tend to be the ‘adventurous’ one. I have a tendency to stretch outside of my comfort zone, take risks, try new things and see new places. Could this be because of my birth order?
Some positive results of being the first born in my adulthood and professional life: patience, focus, encouraging, generally calm, and authoritative (that explains the whole Queen of the Realm thing, huh?). Some challenges in my adulthood and professional life: inflexible, not wanting to be wrong, and needing to be in control (again with the Queen thing). I admit it, I’m a work in progress. But now, I may have an excuse—First born child syndrome.
Are you where you are on your job, in your professional and in your life because of your birth order?
Sending you Love, Happiness and Success from the Realm~RLP
