Job Growth Is Stunted: Is It Time To Bake The Cookies?
By admin | September 10, 2007
For the first time in 4 years, employers actually cut jobs. What a time to be a start-up job board, job seeker, recruiter or employer, huh?
Just last Thursday, I had a consulting meeting with a client regarding online recruiting ad trends. When I pointed out their own weekly job ads numbers declined on major and niche online job boards, people in the room actually squirmed in the chairs like they had to ‘go potty’. I paused expectedly until one of the recruiters (reluctantly it seemed to me) disclosed they were currently hiring through—and I certainly raised my eye-brows when he used the A-word—Attrition (UGH!).
I had a b*%ch and moan session just this morning with a close friend who is a headhunter. He shared with me he has recently seen a steady decline in his job orders. As a result, he is reducing the goals of his recruiters.
Is this shades of the end of 2001, 2002 and 2003 coloring the end of 2007 going into 2008?
An initial reaction might be to stay put. To not make a move in any direction for fear of making costly mistakes. Or worse yet, retreat all together until it’s all over.
Hmmmmm… I think I need a backup plan. I’ll search my “Next Big Idea” file for…I know, my cookies! My past market research (friends, families, strangers offering to buy in bulk) indicates I could turn a delicious profit. Should I put my home- baked oatmeal raisin cookies on the market now? No, not just yet. I won’t panic. I plan to respond to this current job market by digging a little a lot deeper. And by moving with direction, clarity, flexibility—and a nice, warm cookie. I’m going to bake some cookies right now. I know, I know. I don’t need the extra calories. But, with the current job growth numbers, I want comfort food, OK?
How about all of you job boarders, recruiters, employers and job seekers out there…..How are you coping with this job weakness in the short term and what are your plans for the long term?
