8 Business Lessons For Success From My 8-Year Old Instructor

By admin | September 24, 2007

Our 8 year old son loves to bowl.  So my husband and I make every effort to take him to the bowling alley once a week.  If you have read our story, you know I shamelessly bragged about his high score so far: 165 this past summer.  On Saturday morning, I watched him bowl. I mean really watched him bowl.  And watching him reminded me what it takes for business success.   I didn’t plan to take pictures so I used my cell phone to capture my lessons for the day…at the bowing alley:

1.      NICHE-My husband and I try to encourage and support each child in their special interest or hobby.  We believe it will give each child ‘a chance to shine brightly at the dinner table.’ Our 8 year old has chosen bowling.  It’s his ‘thing’.  6.jpg

2.      NETWORK WITH PEERS-He wanted to be on a youth league team.  He says he’s ‘mature enough’ His words not mine.  So we signed him up this past weekend.   His team starts in October.

3.      BE BOLD AND TAKE A CHANCE-He refuses to use bumpers. Actually, he  hasn’t used bumpers since he was 6 and said he was ‘all grown-up’. Again, his words not mine

4.      FOCUS -He gets this look on his face when he picks up his bowling ball.  My husband says, “He’s in the zone.”  He seems to be able to mentally block any noise or distractions.  Even with our 2 year old son buzzing around him.   1.JPG

5.      TAKE ACTION-Once he makes up his mind to go forward, his approach is all in one decisive, smooth motion-with no hint of hesitation. 2.JPG

6.      FOLLOW THROUGH-After his hand lets his ball roll, his entire body continues the follow through. His head is down, his left arm goes out for balance, his right hand swings up and his right leg ends up behind his left leg.3.JPG

7.      RESULTS-For him, his efforts pay off with the opportunity for a strike with every turn and the feeling of personal achievement when the  screen ultimately displays “What A Strike”. 4.JPG

8.      HAVE FUN-At the end of the day, Lesson 1-Lesson 7 won’t be as sweet if you don’t love what you are doing. 5.JPG

I certainly enjoyed this weekend’s refresher course.   The instructor was fun and interesting to watch.   I couldn’t take my eyes off of him.  I learned so much I plan to be in attendance every Saturday morning beginning in October.

P.S.

Son, I want to be fearless—just like you—when I’m “all grown up.”
